ABSTRACT
Introduction and state of knowledge:
The properties of coffee, the popular drink prepared from coffee plant seeds, are still poorly understood and clarified. Scientists’ opinion about the effects of coffee components on human health are still divided. Proponents appreciate coffee not only for its well-known stimulant properties, but also seek an impact on improving mood and form. However, through the negative impact on different physiological processes, coffee cannot be drunk without any restrictions. The aim of the work is to present information on the impacts the components of coffee on human health. Short description: The word ‘coffee’ comes from the Ethiopian province of Kaffa, but according to other sources comes from Turkish wine – ‘qavah’ or ‘kahve’”. The first coffee plantations appeared in 575 AD in Abyssinia and the Horn of Africa. Coffee drinking was initiated by the Arabs between the 11th and 12th centuries. Coffee is currently considered one of the most popular drinks consumed every day by the majority of Poles. The Positively Coffee Programme, undertaken by the International Coffee Organisation ICO), together with the International Coffee Science Association, conducted a number of scientific studies which show that moderate coffee drinking is completely safe, and under no circumstances pose a threat to health. According to other authors, however, drinking coffee is not completely safe. In the current literature, there is no clear statement that coffee has only beneficial or dangerous properties.

Summary:
In this article, the positive and negative aspects of this drink are presented, together with an outline of the historical background of the habit of coffee drinking in the world.
