Drug therapy is the basic option in the management of hypertension. Five groups of antihypertensive agents are included in the first-choice regimen: diuretics, beta-blocking agents, calcium blockers and drugs affecting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor antagonists. Effective drug therapy helps avoidance of severe organ damage and decreases the risk of death and hypertension-related diseases.
