ABSTRACT
Diabetes as a metabolic disease, is associated with disorders of microelements homeostasis. The aim of the study was determination of the level the ions of iron, copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, cadmium and manganese in blood serum of the patients with type 2 diabetes and in the control group. Methodology: 56 persons with type 2 diabetes and 10 persons in the control group were qualified for the study. Blood samples were taken from all patients in order to determine ions of iron, copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, the cadmium and the manganese. The concentration of selected ions was determined by the method of highly efficient atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: The mean concentration of copper ions concentration was significantly lower in the group of patients with diabetes, compared to the concentration of this ion in the control group. However, the cobalt ions concentration was higher in the group with type 2 diabetes than in the control group. Conclusions: In patients with type 2 diabetes, disorders may occur in the concentrations of microelements. Copper and cobalt ions may participate in the pathogenesis of diabetes.
