ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Orthodontic treatment is the recipe for a beautiful smile, self-acceptance and improvement of a position in the society. However, many people do not realize that the acquisition of such an effect is not possible without special attention to the oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment.

Aim:
The aim of this study was to determine the level of oral hygiene of children with mixed and permanent dentition in early school age, during orthodontic treatment with removable and fixed orthodontic appliance, living in the urban and rural region.

Material and Methods:
The study included 105 children (43 from the rural area and 62 urban area) at the age of 6–12 years. Information about hygiene and oral health were obtained using a questionnaire completed by the parents/guardians of children during orthodontic treatment at the Clinic of Maxillofacial Orthopedics, of Dental Clinical Centre in Lublin

Results:
In the most cases the oral hygiene was satisfactory and did not contribute to the deterioration of oral health. Unfortunately, in about 30% of children during orthodontic treatment, whose oral hygiene procedures were carried out irregularly, caregivers observed deterioration of oral hygiene.

Conclusions:
The main reason causing the occurrence of diseases and infections of the mouth was the failure to comply with the recommendations of care provided by a specialist in orthodontic office. Lack of proper attitudes of parents regarding the education and control of their children’s dental care habits and poor attitude of the patient to health is significantly. Increased control over the performance of children oral hygiene by an adult will increase the effectiveness of the treatment
