ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Breast cancer is one of the major health problems among women in Poland. Analysis of breast cancer cases and deaths shows large territorial disproportion.
Objective:
The objective of the study was analysis of morbidity and mortality due to breast cancer, with consideration of attendance at screening in the Lublin Region.
Material and Methods:
The material for analysis was data concerning cases of breast cancer and deaths due to breast cancer registered in the National Cancer Register during the period 2000–2011, and data concerning the covering with the Population Programme of Early Breast Cancer Detection among women aged 50–69 in the Lublin Region, based on the report from the Information Technology System of Prophylaxis Monitoring covering the years 2007–2013.
Results:
Within 10 years of observation, in the Lublin Region, the number of newly registered cases of breast cancer has increased by more than 300 cases. In the period analyzed, the standardized morbidity rate increased from 33.65/100,000 in 2000 up to 43.69/100,000 in 2011. In 2000, in the Lublin Region, breast cancer was the major cause of deaths due to cancerous diseases, and in 2011 occupied the second position among malignant cancers in this region. Analysis of attendance at the screening organized indicates that in 2007 the percentage of the women examined within the programme was 33.5%, while in 2013 the coverage rate increased up to 47.36%.
Conclusions:
In the years 2000–2011, an increase was observed in the incidence of breast cancer, and mortality maintaining itself on a constant level, which is undoubtedly related with an increase in the effectiveness of the Population Programme of Early Breast Cancer Detection.
