The study describes a rarely diagnosed nosological unit called Wernicke’s encephalopathy. This disease is caused by the deficiency of Vitamin B1 (thiamine). In Polish conditions, the symptoms of the disease may be observed most frequently among the patients after many years of alcoholism and the accompanying malnutrition. The most common symptoms of the disease are the following: ataxia, oculomotor disorders and conscience quality disorders. This study presents pathogenesis, the most frequent course of the disease, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic actions.
